✏️ Bezier Path in After Effects – Explained!

In Adobe After Effects, a Bezier Path inside a Shape Layer lets you create and control custom vector shapes—just like in Illustrator or Photoshop. With Bezier paths, you gain precise control using anchor points and curve handles.

🎯 What is a Bezier Path?

A Bezier Path is a customizable path defined by:

  • 🔵 Anchor Points – define the shape’s structure

  • 🧩 Direction Handles – bend and curve the lines

  • 🔗 Path Lines – connect the anchor points

It’s ideal for creating unique shapes, logos, animated lines, and path-based animations.

🛠️ How to Use a Bezier Path in Shape Layers

✅ Method 1: Convert a Basic Shape to Bezier

  1. Draw a Shape
Use the Shape Tool (Rectangle, Ellipse, etc.)

  2. Open the Shape Settings
    Timeline →

    Shape Layer >
      Contents >
        [Shape Name] >
          [Shape Path Name]

  3. Convert to Bezier
    Right-click on Rectangle Path 1
    Select Convert To Bezier Path

🎉 Now you can fully edit the path using the Selection Tool (V).

✅ Method 2: Create a Bezier Path with the Pen Tool

  1. Select the Pen Tool (G) from the top toolbar

  2. Click and drag on the composition panel to add points and curves

  3. A new shape layer is created with a Bezier Path by default

Now, use the Selection Tool (V) or Convert Vertex Tool to fine-tune your shape.

✏️ Editing Bezier Paths

Once you have a Bezier path:

  • Use Selection Tool (V) to move anchor points

  • Use Convert Vertex Tool (Hold Alt / Option) to:

    • Add curves to sharp points

    • Convert curved points to straight corners

    • Adjust direction handles for smoother transitions

💡 Pro Tips

  • You can animate the Path property over time to create morphing shapes or shape transitions

  • Combine with Trim Paths to animate drawing or revealing your custom path
